What is a Bank PO? For a beginner the first question which appears in the mind is What is a Bank PO? Let me tell you that a Bank PO is the designation of an Assistant Manager. It is called Probationary Officer (PO) because initially he or she remains on probation for some time. Assistant Manager, Probationer, Scale I Officer and Probationary Officer all are same designations in Bank.

What is the purpose of Probation Period? After selection as a Probationary Officer (PO) in a particular bank a PO has to remain on probation normally for 2 years. The purpose of the probation period is to give training to the candidates. An officer has to participate in various training programmes during the probation period. It is basically the learning period in which officers are groomed for important assignments after probation.

More on Probation Period: During probation period there are frequent postings and transfers. Only after completion of probation period final posting is given. After probation the officer is confirmed as an Assistant Manager and gets his or her permanent posting. Some banks are now-a-days placing officers as Deputy Managers also just after confirmation, provided they pass the test conducted by the bank. Mainly SBI gives this opportunity. Just before completion of probation period a confirmation test is conducted in SBI. Those who pass it are confirmed and those who stands high in the merit gets position of Deputy Manager.

Which are the major Bank Probationary Officer Examination of India? In our country the two most popular Probationary Officer Exam are that of SBI and IBPS. Now-a-days there are various bank such as Andhra Bank, Bank of Baroda and United Bank of India are also announcing Bank PO Recruitment through Manipal School of Banking. However the fact remains that SBI PO and IBPS PO are the most popular and big recruitments of India.  

What is the Eligibility Criteria for IBPS PO and SBI PO? Now I will tell you about the eligibility criteria of IBPS PO as well as of SBI PO.  For IBPS PO the age requirement is between 20 – 30 years. The educational qualification requirement will be a degree in any discipline from a recognised university or any equivalent qualification.

As far as SBI PO is concerned the age requirement is between 21 – 30 years. The educational qualification requirement is similar to that of IBPS PO. The educational qualification required is a degree in any discipline from a recognised university or any equivalent qualification.

Exam pattern of IBPS PO: The exam pattern of IBPS PO consist of preliminary examination, mains examination and interview.

Exam pattern of SBI PO: The exam pattern of SBI PO is almost similar to IBPS PO and consists of preliminary examination, mains examination and interview.

There will also be a Descriptive Test of 30 minutes duration with 50 marks will be a Test of English Language (Letter Writing & Essay). The candidates are required to qualify in the Descriptive Test.

How much Time Required for Preparation of Bank PO Exam? A common question which is being asked by the students is how much time is required for preparation? Normally one year is enough for good preparation. However if one can devote lot of time even six months are good enough for preparation.

Whether Coaching is required for preparation of Bank PO? There are many good coachings available for the Bank Probationary Officer Examination. In my view there is no need for classroom coaching. Classroom coaching takes lot of time and may not serve the purpose. Rather than going for the classroom coaching one should take books of good publications.
